117. A BIG BANG

Aurora Skies, 2016 again... 

A few hours before dawn, the whole city is asleep. Suddenly, a distant but loud explosion shatters the peace of the peaceful winter night, shaking the windows of houses and buildings.

At the same time, at the Shen's headquarters...

Dustin was quietly eating a snack before going to rest after a long night's work when he heard the bang, so loud it shook glass and walls, even the chair he was sitting in.

"What the hell--?"

From the intensity and proximity, he deduced that the horrific sound had come from his yard. Without hesitation, and quite alarmed, he ran to peek out the window, knowing in advance what he might find.

"Damn right; it was the portal!"

The portal was still there in one piece, shrouded in the bright glow that indicated it was active. The lightning bolts at its center were still glowing too, but no traveler was in sight.   

"I'm sure the noise came from over there, someone must be trying to break through... Wait, what?"

Another powerful bang interrupted his thoughts, and a silhouette was drawn through the mist just outside the portal, which Dustin recognized immediately.

"Oh, my--it's Robin!" He gasped as he saw him stagger and fall to his knees.

Without a second thought, he ran for the door.  As he did so, he caught a glimpse of Robin collapsing on the icy snow.

"Yes, that's him, he doesn't look good. The portal is on fire, I must get him out of there before there's another explosion."
